ORIGINAL PAINTING BY SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS

WILLIAM 5TH DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE

Sir Joshua Reynolds – (16 July 1723 – 23 February 1792) the father of British portrait painting and first president of the Royal Academy. Reynolds painted a number of portraits of the Dukes of Devonshire and their families between 1755 and the 1780's. William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, (December 14, 1748 – July 29, 1811), was the eldest son of the 4th Duke of Devonshire. Believed to have been painted 1766-67. Half length wearing a high neck coat and at about eighteen years old. This portrait comes with copy letters from the National Portrait Gallery, London and from Country Life Ltd, London, both dated 1958 and stating that the artist is Sir Joshua Reynolds and that this is a version of the one hanging in Althorp House, (Princess Dianna's family home). The premier portrait being in Lord Spencer's collection. Plaster frame with minor losses. Dimensions; 29.75 x 24.75 Inches. The rear stretcher is marked to Lord Walter T Kerr GCB. (28 September 1839 - 12 May 1927) who was First sea Lord and Naval advisor to Queen Victoria and it is probable that this portrait hung in his home, Melbourne Hall.
